Species that stay open year-round have no opener and are listed on their state and species pages instead.

Tracking 213 dated openers across 26 states and 34 species so far. Openers are resolved for 2026; many states define them as a floating weekday (“first Saturday in May”), so confirm against the official agency before a trip.

  • Each entry is a season's opening date — the day harvest legally begins — followed by the close date. A species with separate zone seasons appears once per zone, because those zones open on different days.
  • Year-round species are not listed here. If a fish you want is missing, it is most likely open all year in that state — check its species page to confirm.
  • Dates are resolved for the 2026regulation year. Many openers float (“first Saturday in May”), so the calendar date shifts year to year even when the rule does not.
  • Openers can be overridden by emergency closures. Watch the destination agency's emergency-order channel before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

When does fishing season open in 2026?
It depends entirely on the state and the species. Warmwater fish such as largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie are open year-round in most southern states, so there is no opening day to wait for. Coldwater and managed fisheries — inland trout, walleye, northern pike, muskellunge, and many salmon and striped-bass runs — have a fixed opener, most commonly a Saturday in late April or May. This calendar lists every dated opener in our coverage by month so you can see what unlocks when. Year-round species are not listed here because they have no opener; they appear on their state and species pages instead.
Why do two states (or two zones in one state) open on different dates?
Fishery managers set opener dates to protect fish during the spawn, which happens at different times depending on latitude and water temperature. Does the opening day fall on the same calendar date every year?
Often not. Many states define the opener as a floating weekday — "the first Saturday in May" or "the Saturday before Memorial Day" — so the exact date shifts year to year even though the rule does not. The dates shown here are resolved for the 2026 regulation year. Always confirm against the official state agency before a trip, and watch the agency's emergency-order channel: a closure can override a published opener with little notice.
Can I fish before the season opens?
Sometimes — but only where the regulations explicitly allow it. A number of states run a catch-and-release or artificial-only window ahead of the harvest opener (Wisconsin's pre-opener bass period and South Carolina's Delayed-Harvest trout reaches are examples). Outside those defined windows, targeting a closed-season species is illegal even if you intend to release it.
