Missouri's Ozark float-stream smallmouth fishery is one of the most-celebrated stream smallmouth resources in the country. The Big Piney, Gasconade, Meramec + Big River, Elk, James, and dozens of other Ozark streams carry MDC Smallmouth Bass Special Management Area regulations — a 15-inch minimum with a rule that only 1 of the 6-fish black bass daily limit may be a smallmouth. Bull Shoals Lake (MO/AR boundary) and Table Rock Lake produce the trophy lake-record class. The statewide rule is a 6-fish daily limit across black bass with a 12-inch minimum on streams (no statewide minimum on impoundments unless posted). On most Ozark and non-Ozark streams smallmouth may only be caught and released from March 1 until the harvest season opens May 23.
