Bluefish — the hard-charging, blitz-running gamefish that drives RI's most explosive surf and boat action — sweep into Narragansett Bay, the south-shore breachways, Block Island Sound, and the Sakonnet River from late spring through fall. The August – October run pushes big 'slammer' and 'gator' blues into the rips at Pt. Judith, Charlestown Breachway, Sakonnet Point, and Watch Hill, often mixed with bonito and false albacore. RIDEM manages bluefish under the ASMFC / Mid-Atlantic Council plan with NO minimum size and a fishing-mode split daily bag: 5 fish per day for shore + private-boat anglers and 7 fish per day on for-hire (party / charter) vessels, open year-round. The RI state record is 26 lb (D. Deziel, 1981). Topwater plugs, metal lures, and live or cut bait all produce; wire or heavy-fluorocarbon leaders are standard insurance against the species' notorious teeth. The RI Recreational Saltwater Fishing Licence (FREE registry-based, ages 16+) is required.
