Massachusetts has just two self-sustaining lake trout (locally 'togue') fisheries — Quabbin Reservoir and Wachusett Reservoir — and both are among the best lake trout waters south of Maine. Quabbin (24,500 acres, the largest inland water body in MA, created in 1939 by flooding the four Swift River Valley towns of Greenwich, Dana, Enfield, and Prescott) holds a wild, naturally-reproducing population that produced the MA state record — 25 lb 7 oz, caught by William Roy in 2016. Wachusett Reservoir (4,135 acres, the Boston-metro MWRA/DCR water supply on the South Branch of the Nashua River in Clinton + West Boylston) holds the second self-sustaining population and routinely gives up 30+ inch fish from shore — the longest lake trout ever recorded in MA, a 39-inch fish, came from Wachusett. The two reservoirs carry DIFFERENT regulations: Quabbin is 2 fish per day with an 18-inch minimum, while Wachusett is 3 fish per day with NO minimum size.
