Maine's smallmouth bass fishery is the country's northernmost premier smallmouth bass tier — MDIFW manages a robust naturalized population across the central + southern + Down East lake system + the major river main stems. The species was introduced into Maine waters in 1869 (stocking from Lake Erie / Niagara River strain into Phillips Pond, Aroostook County), and the population has since expanded to fill nearly every warm-water lake + river system in the state south of Greenville, plus much of the central Aroostook County system.
