What to know before you fish Mount Rainier

  • Streams: all native fish (bull trout, cutthroat, native rainbow) are catch-and-release with single barbless hooks; all non-native fish (eastern brook trout, kokanee salmon outside lakes) must be retained — anglers are explicitly asked to remove non-natives to restore native populations. There are no daily creel limits on non-native fish.
  • Closed-to-fishing streams (water-supply protection): Klickitat Creek above Sunrise Road, Ipsut Creek above the campground intake, Laughingwater Creek above the Ohanapecosh intake, Edith Creek above Paradise. Closed to protect federally-listed bull trout: Fryingpan Creek above the confluence with the White River.
  • Lakes: open year-round with NO daily or annual catch limits, except Tipsoo / Shadow / Reflection (riparian protection) and Frozen / Ghost (water supply) are closed entirely. Eastern brook trout is the most common species in park lakes.
