NO Texas state fishing licence is required inside Big Bend National Park — but a free NPS fishing permit (issued at any open visitor center during normal business hours) IS required. A Texas state licence IS required on the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River stretches outside the park boundary.

What to know before you fish Big Bend

  • Open waters are the Rio Grande only; certain ponds and springs reserved for endangered desert fish are CLOSED — no take or release of any fish in those waters. Season is open year-round on the Rio Grande inside the park.
  • Daily and possession limit is 25 fish per person per day inside Big Bend National Park (bait minnows excluded from the limit); Texas state limits apply on the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River reaches outside the park.
  • Legal methods are pole-and-line, rod-reel-and-line, throw (hand) line, and trot line (max 50 hooks, set ≥ 3 ft below the surface, gear tag with name/address/date required, checked at least every 24 hours). Jug lines, traps, spears, nets, chumming, and any unlisted method are PROHIBITED in the park — jug lines are legal only on the Wild & Scenic River outside park boundaries.
  • Bait restriction: terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates (worms, larval insects, other non-fish life forms) are PROTECTED in the park and may not be collected. Live bait is prohibited except for minnows obtained from the Rio Grande within the park or within the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River — bring no outside bait.

How licensing works at Big Bend

No fishing license or permit is required to fish inside Big Bend National Park. That is unusual for a National Park Service unit and typically reflects a memorial or urban water with no managed sport fishery, or a specific carve-out. Park-specific safety and access rules still apply, and any water flowing outside the boundary reverts to the host state's license the moment you cross the line.
