What to know before you fish Crater Lake

  • Crater Lake itself: kokanee salmon and rainbow trout (both introduced) — no possession limit, no minimum size, retain anything you catch.
  • Park streams: native bull trout is federally threatened — bull trout caught in any stream MUST be released immediately; only brook trout and brown trout may be retained from streams.
  • Gear restriction: only non-organic artificial lures may be used (no bait, no chum, no scented soft-plastic) — designed to prevent introduction of non-native organisms into the lake and streams.
  • Lake access: Cleetwood Cove Trail is the ONLY legal access to the lake itself — 1.1 miles each way with 700+ feet of elevation change; carry-in/carry-out only. Trail is closed seasonally (typically mid-October through mid-June).
