What to know before you fish Isle Royale

  • Two-zone licensing: interior lakes need no state licence (NPS rule covers all of it); Lake Superior portion of the park (including all park bays and harbors) requires a Michigan state fishing licence with the appropriate species endorsements.
  • Coaster brook trout are CATCH-AND-RELEASE ONLY in every water of the park — Lake Superior and interior — overriding any Michigan creel allowance.   • Aquatic invasive species (AIS) controls: clean and dry all gear and change line spools when moving between Lake Superior and interior lakes — Isle Royale's interior lakes remain one of the few intact native-fish systems in the Great Lakes basin and the park asks anglers to treat each system as a separate watershed.
  • Fish-consumption advisories apply to certain park-caught fish; consult the NPS Transport & Consumption guidance before retaining fish for the mainland. Live-bait restrictions apply on interior lakes — confirm current park rules before leaving the dock.
