What to know before you fish Mammoth Cave
- Primary fishery is the Green River — destination water for smallmouth bass, muskellunge, catfish, and panfish; the river also holds more species of native freshwater mussels than any other river in North America (seven are federally endangered — DO NOT touch, collect, or possess live mussels or shells anywhere in the park).
- Live bait rules vary by water: in Sloans Crossing Pond, Green Pond, Doyle Pond, and First Creek Lake only worms may be used as live bait; in all other park waters live minnows and worms are both permitted — practice Leave No Trace and pack out excess bait.
- Seining for bait minnows and crawfish is allowed only in 12 named small creeks (Bylew, First, Second, Pine, Cub Run, Buffalo, Ugly, Mill Branch, Floating Mill Branch, Dry Branch, Big Hollow, Blowing Spring) with seines ≤ 4×6 ft and mesh ≤ ¼ inch. Trotlines allowed but limited to two per person, 50 hooks max, hooks ≥ 30 in apart, set ≥ 3 ft below the surface, checked every 24 hours; jugging and limb-line (set-line) fishing are PROHIBITED parkwide.
- All Kentucky waters are under a statewide mercury fish-consumption advisory — consult KDFW for per-species and per-water consumption guidelines, particularly for larger predator fish from the Green River. Check the Green River gauge at NWS Louisville / Ohio River Forecast Center before a trip; the river can rise rapidly after upstream rain.
