  • Park context: Padre Island National Seashore protects ~70 miles of the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world — North Padre Island from just south of Corpus Christi to the Mansfield Channel jetty. The Gulf of Mexico fronts the east side; the hypersaline Laguna Madre lagoon (one of only ~6 in the world) fronts the west. The park is a critical Kemp's ridley sea turtle nesting site (the world's most endangered sea turtle), and a major migratory bird flyway. The main angler-facing zones are Malaquite Beach (developed visitor area), Bird Island Basin (Laguna Madre access), and the down-island OSV-accessed Gulf beaches running south toward the Mansfield Channel.
  • Texas licence framework: TPWD issues the standard Texas fishing licence + saltwater endorsement (the 'package'). Resident and non-resident options. Children under 17 do not require a licence under Texas law. Licences are NOT sold inside the seashore — buy before driving south from Corpus Christi.   • Anchor species + outside-park context: Laguna Madre is a renowned wade-fishery for spotted seatrout, red drum (the Texas red drum slot is regulated), black drum, sheepshead, southern flounder, and gafftopsail catfish in skinny water; the Gulf surf side delivers Spanish mackerel, bluefish, jack crevalle, ladyfish, sharks (blacktip + bonnethead + bull on heavy gear), pompano, and seasonal tarpon. The Mansfield Channel jetty (south end of accessible beach) is the down-island anchor for tarpon + snook + jack crevalle. Bird Island Basin is the boat-launch access into Laguna Madre. TPWD-published mercury advisories specifically caution: adult men and women past childbearing age should limit consumption of blackfin tuna, little tunny, crevalle jack, swordfish, wahoo, and all sharks to TWO 8-oz meals per month.
