What to know before you fish Lake Roosevelt NRA

  • Park context: Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area protects ~100,390 acres along the 150-mile-long Lake Roosevelt — the reservoir formed by Grand Coulee Dam (completed 1942, Bureau of Reclamation) on the Columbia River in north-central Washington. The lake floods the Columbia River canyon from Grand Coulee Dam upstream to the US/Canada border, plus the lower Spokane River arm. Reservation co-management: the lake's western shoreline borders the Colville Indian Reservation (Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation), and the lake's southern Spokane Arm borders the Spokane Indian Reservation (Spokane Tribe of Indians) — tribal jurisdiction applies on / from reservation shoreline waters. The reservoir is operated by the Bureau of Reclamation + Bonneville Power Administration for hydroelectric generation, irrigation, flood control, and recreation; NPS administers surface lands + reservoir surface for recreation. Other species: CUTTHROAT TROUT, smallmouth + largemouth BASS, SUNFISH, CARP, NORTHERN PIKE (invasive, removal-encouraged), and BULLHEAD CATFISH.
  • Outside-park context: Washington Department of Public Health Fish Consumption Advisory is in effect for Lake Roosevelt (mercury + PCBs + heavy metals from upstream mining legacy and downstream smelter contamination — verify current-year DOH advisory by species + reach before consuming caught fish). NPS-authorized fishing-charter services operate at Lake Roosevelt — verify Commercial Use Authorization status. Major boat launches: Spring Canyon (Grand Coulee end), Kettle Falls (mid-reservoir), Fort Spokane (Spokane Arm confluence), Hawk Creek, Hunters, Gifford.
