A California state fishing licence (CDFW) is required for anyone 16 or older. Redwood NSP is a joint NPS + California State Parks administrative unit, so CDFW + CA State Parks rules layer on top of the federal superintendent's compendium — the strictest rule wins on any given water.

What to know before you fish Redwood NSP

  • Salmon and steelhead waters — Smith River, Klamath River, and Redwood Creek — are federal-ESA habitat for Southern Oregon / Northern California Coast Coho salmon (threatened); CDFW's annual low-flow closure protocol shuts these rivers to angling when gauged flows drop below published thresholds — check the CDFW Low-Flow Closures page before traveling.
  • Redwood Creek and tributary closures: portions of the creek are closed to all persons and vehicles from 10pm–6am daily during salmon spawning (October 15 – March 31) under the superintendent's compendium to protect redds and emergent fry.
  • The Klamath River through Redwood NSP runs along Yurok ancestral and reservation lands; tribal members operate under separate Yurok / Karuk / Hupa Tribal fishing rights, and the Klamath chinook quota allocation is set jointly by CDFW, the tribes, and PFMC each year — non-tribal anglers follow CDFW rules.
  • Coastal surf smelt, redtail surfperch, and Pacific tomcod follow CDFW saltwater rules; rocky-intertidal collection inside park boundaries is generally prohibited (the park is a Marine Reserve / Marine Conservation Area patchwork — verify which MPA classification applies to your stretch of beach).
