What to know before you fish Lassen Volcanic

  • Manzanita Lake special rule: catch-and-release ONLY. Tackle must be a single barbless hook on an artificial lure. NO living or non-living bait may be used. The lake is rated a blue-ribbon fly fishery by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and holds a fair population of rainbow and brown trout — pinching the barb is a regulatory requirement, not a suggestion.
  • Lakes with confirmed trout populations (rainbow / brown / brook depending on water): Butte Lake, Snag Lake, Horseshoe Lake (the most popular destinations after Manzanita); Ridge Lake, Terrace Lake, Summit Lake, Crystal Lake (smaller, less-pressured backcountry waters). Juniper Lake holds NO game species — anglers should not target it. Most lakes have brush rims (willow + alder) so non-motorized boats or float-tubes substantially improve casting access; small open shoreline sections exist on most lakes.
  • Creeks with confirmed fish populations: Kings Creek and Grassy Swale Creek both hold brook trout; trout populations also confirmed in North Fork Bailey Creek, North Arm Rice Creek, Hat Creek, Hot Springs Creek, and Summit Creek. Hat Creek inside the park is brushy with limited road access — most productive fishing is downstream of the park along Highway 89 between Hat Creek and Old Station, where CDFW plants fish through the season (use the CDFW Fishing Guide interactive map for plant locations).
  • Park-wide prohibitions: fishing is NOT permitted in any park boat launch area — Manzanita, Butte, and Juniper Lake launches are all closed to fishing. The park has not stocked fish since the 1980s; healthy populations exist by natural reproduction alone. Releasing fish: wet hands before touching, crimp barbs (required at Manzanita), use a knotless rubber net, release any unwanted fish immediately rather than later off a stringer, and pack out all discarded fishing line.
  • Aquatic-invasive prevention is mandatory and called out specifically: zebra / quagga mussels are the named ecological threat. Clean / Drain / Dry every piece of gear (boats, trailers, waders, boots, clothing, nets) between water bodies — remove all visible mud / plants / fish / animals, drain all collected water, and dry before reuse. The park treats invasive vectors as a hard rule for in-park fishing access, not a courtesy ask.
