Fishing inside Fire Island National Seashore is governed by New York State recreational saltwater rules — anglers 16 or older must hold a FREE New York State Recreational Marine Fishing Registry (no fee). NY State seasons, size, and possession limits apply. Commercial fishing is PROHIBITED inside seashore boundaries. What to know before you fish Fire Island

  • Park context: Fire Island National Seashore protects most of a ~32-mile barrier island on the south shore of Long Island, NY, separating the Atlantic Ocean from the Great South Bay. The seashore runs from Robert Moses State Park (west end) to Smith Point County Park (east end) but excludes the 17 private year-round residential communities scattered along the island. Most of Fire Island is accessible only by passenger ferry, water taxi, or via the two ends. Park headquarters and the main mainland operations base sit at Patchogue, with sub-units at the Fire Island Lighthouse (west), Sailors Haven (Sunken Forest), Watch Hill, and the Wilderness Visitor Centre near Smith Point. Both ocean-surf and bay-side fishing are popular year-round — best windows are spring and fall.
  • New York licence framework: New York DOES NOT charge a fee for saltwater recreational fishing — anglers 16+ instead complete the FREE New York State Recreational Marine Fishing Registry administered by the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). Renewal annually. The registration is required to fish in NY State marine waters (including the Atlantic surf and Great South Bay around Fire Island). Note: this is separate from the NY State freshwater fishing licence (a paid licence required for freshwater) — Fire Island fishing is essentially all saltwater so the registry alone suffices.
  • Park-specific rules layered under 36 CFR §2.3: (a) fishing is ALLOWED on private vessels, on ocean beaches OUTSIDE designated lifeguarded swim areas, on the bay shoreline, and on authorised docks and piers OUTSIDE NPS marinas (specifically excluding Patchogue Headquarters, Patchogue Ferry Terminal, and Talisman Dock); (b) fishing is PROHIBITED on the Lighthouse Pier OR on a vessel within 300 feet of the Lighthouse Pier; (c) fishing is PROHIBITED from motor road bridges, from or within 200 feet of any public raft or float designated for water sports, or within designated swimming beaches, surfing areas, or public boat docks (except in designated angler-access areas); (d) Park-specific: HARVEST OF HORSESHOE CRABS is PROHIBITED within Fire Island National Seashore (NY State permits horseshoe-crab harvest under quota — the park is stricter); (e) Possession of fish traps and nets is permitted in salt water only in accordance with NY State regulations; (f) anglers must immediately return undersize / out-of-season / unwanted fish to the water — the released fish does not count toward catch or possession limit provided the angler had not already reached the limit at time of catch.
  • Anchor species: striped bass (the marquee Fire Island fishery — spring + fall surf-cast runs along the entire 32-mile beach), bluefish, and summer flounder (fluke) are the three most-targeted species per NPS. Other regularly caught species include weakfish, scup (porgy), black sea bass, blackfish (tautog), winter flounder, Atlantic mackerel, and surf-zone northern kingfish. Bay-side anchor includes blue crab and clamming (per NY State shellfish rules — separate registration may apply). NYSDEC maintains TWO artificial fishing reefs in the Great South Bay and several in the Atlantic Ocean south of Fire Island — these are listed at the NYSDEC artificial-reef program page and consistently produce sea bass / blackfish / fluke for boat anglers.
  • Outside-park context: Captree State Park (eastern end of Jones Beach Island, north of Fire Island Inlet) hosts the regional charter-fishing fleet — multiple party boats run daily targets for fluke (summer), striped bass + blackfish (fall), and cod offshore. Boat ramps for private vessels available at Captree, several other nearby state parks, and Smith Point County Marina. Fire Island National Seashore runs on the host state's regular fishing license — there is no separate National Park Service fishing permit to buy. Use the same New York license you would use anywhere else in the state.
