A Florida state fishing licence is required — saltwater licence for marine waters (Florida Bay, Ten Thousand Islands, Whitewater Bay backcountry), freshwater licence for the inland canals, sloughs, and ponds. Park-specific NPS regulations apply on top of FWC rules.

What to know before you fish Everglades

  • Children under 16 do not need a Florida licence. FWC saltwater rules (snook closed seasons, redfish slot, tarpon catch-and-release tagging) all apply inside the park.
  • Live or dead bait fish, amphibians, and non-preserved fish eggs are PROHIBITED as bait in fresh waters of the park (NPS rule overrides FWC general allowance). Use of cast nets is restricted.
  • Mercury advisory: do not eat any largemouth bass caught north of Main Park Road; limit consumption of bass caught south of Main Park Road. Posted at trailheads.
  • Backcountry overnight camping requires a separate NPS wilderness permit — issued at Flamingo or Gulf Coast visitor centers.
