Park-specific overrides: (a) FISHING IS PROHIBITED in Travertine Creek and other bodies of water east of US-177 (including all waters east of the Travertine Nature Center) — protects swimmers from lost line/hooks; (b) on Veterans Lake + creeks + all small watershed lakes <100 acres, only HAND-LINE or ROD-AND-REEL is permitted — trotlines, yo-yos, sail lines, jug lines, and nets are PROHIBITED EXCEPT at Lake of the Arbuckles.

  • Park context: Chickasaw National Recreation Area protects ~9,888 acres in south-central Oklahoma around the town of Sulphur. The park has an unusual lineage — originally created as the Sulphur Springs Reservation in 1902 to protect freshwater + mineral springs (the Chickasaw Nation transferred the land to the federal government), redesignated as Platt National Park (1906-1976) — at the time the smallest unit in the National Park System and the only NP named for a sitting Senator (Orville Platt of Connecticut) — then merged with the surrounding Arbuckle Recreation Area in 1976 to form the current NRA.
