What to know before you fish Cape Cod

  • Park context: Cape Cod National Seashore protects ~43,600 acres along the outer Cape — 40 miles of Atlantic shoreline from Provincetown south through Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham, Orleans, Chatham, and Nauset. The shoreline encompasses some of the most heavily-fished Atlantic surf in the region; the park's six developed swimming beaches (Race Point, Herring Cove, Head of the Meadow, Coast Guard, Nauset Light, Marconi) all permit fishing outside the lifeguarded swim window. Freshwater ponds (Gull, Higgins, Long, Great, Slough, Snow, Williams) hold trout / largemouth bass / chain pickerel / yellow perch and are managed under MassWildlife regulation.
  • Massachusetts licence framework: TWO separate state agencies govern fishing depending on water type. Saltwater anglers register with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (no fee for the saltwater registration in most years for residents 16+; non-residents pay an annual fee). Freshwater anglers buy a MassWildlife (Division of Fisheries & Wildlife) sport-fishing licence. Children under 16 (saltwater) and under 15 (freshwater) do not require credentials. Anglers fishing both fresh and salt water on the same trip need both credentials.
  • Park-specific rules layered under 36 CFR §2.3: fishing IS authorized from designated swimming beaches throughout the year EXCEPT between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM from June 15 through Labor Day (the lifeguarded swim window). Night-fishing parking is permitted between 12:00 AM and 6:00 AM at otherwise-closed lots — anglers must obtain a NIGHT FISHING PARKING PERMIT at a visitor centre in advance. Disposal of fish remains on park beaches is PROHIBITED. Standard NPS §2.3 prohibitions apply to chumming in fresh water, possession of live or dead minnows as freshwater bait outside designated waters, commercial fishing, and use of drugs / poisons / explosives / electricity.
  • Surf-fishery anchor species: striped bass and bluefish are the marquee Cape Cod surf fishery from late spring through fall (the Race Point and Herring Cove rips are world-class). Atlantic-mackerel runs through the early summer. Tautog (blackfish), scup, black sea bass, and summer flounder (fluke) are the deeper-water targets from boat or jetty. Striped bass slot limits and bag windows are set annually by MassDMF and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's Striped Bass Management Board — verify the current-year slot before keeping any striper.
  • Outside-park context: the Cape Cod Canal (~30 mi west of the park core, joint US Army Corps + MassDMF jurisdiction) is the regional surf-fishery cathedral for striped bass run season; the Elizabeth Islands chain (Vineyard Sound) and Buzzards Bay support the season's high-end stripers + bluefish; freshwater ponds across the Cape are stocked by MassWildlife on a spring rotation.
