What to know before you fish Apostle Islands

  • Target species in the Lakeshore's Lake Superior waters are Lake Trout, Brown Trout, Brook Trout, Rainbow (Steelhead) Trout, and Coho Salmon — the Great Lakes Trout/Salmon Stamp is required even if you only intend to fish for one of these species.
  • Park boundary extends ¼ mile offshore from each island — fishing charters operating outside that line do not need NPS registration, but most reputable Bayfield-area charters are park-authorized. Many water taxi services and charters depart from Bayfield Peninsula towns (Ashland, Port Wing, Bayfield).
  • Seasonal pattern: Spring (ice-out – early June) brings near-shore trout/salmon to spawning streams (Sioux, Onion, Pikes, Cranberry, Flag Rivers) and points along the Bayfield Peninsula — cast from shore in 10–30 ft. Summer (mid-June – August) means deeper water trolling for Lake Trout, often inside the Madeline – Long Island 'sportfishing only' area established by Wisconsin DNR. Fall (Sep – Nov) returns trout/salmon to shore.
  • Eagle Island closed to approach within 500 feet during the summer nesting season to protect colonial nesting birds. Lake Superior is dangerous water — sudden squalls, fog, and cold temperatures are routine; monitor NOAA marine channel 7 (162.525 MHz) before and during any trip.
