The area between the Mooselookmeguntic Lake dam and a line drawn between the two cribwork piers about 800 yards west of the dam is fly fishing only and closed to the taking of smelts; landlocked salmon 1 / day, 16 in min; all brook trout must be released alive at once. Frequently asked questions
- What special fishing regulations apply at Upper Dam Pool (Richardsontown Township, Oxford County)?
- Upper Dam Pool (Richardsontown Township, Oxford County) carries one special-regulation overlay that overrides Maine's statewide 2026 rules. It reads: "North Zone. The area between the Mooselookmeguntic Lake dam and a line drawn between the two cribwork piers about 800 yards west of the dam is fly fishing only and closed to the taking of smelts; landlocked salmon 1 / day, 16 in min; all brook trout must be released alive at once. Open to open-water fishing in October under fly-fishing-only with all trout, landlocked salmon and togue released alive at once. No motorboats are allowed within 150 yards downstream or westerly of the dam gates. The legendary Upper Dam pool between Mooselookmeguntic and Upper Richardson Lakes — where Carrie Stevens tied the Gray Ghost streamer and the all-tackle world-record brook trout (14 lb 8 oz, 1916) was taken. (MDIFW 2026 Special Fishing Laws.)." Every overlay on this water body is listed in full above.
- Do I need a fishing license to fish Upper Dam Pool (Richardsontown Township, Oxford County)?
- Yes. Upper Dam Pool (Richardsontown Township, Oxford County) is in Maine, so a valid Maine fishing license is required just as it is anywhere else in the state, issued by Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife (MDIFW) — freshwater; Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) — saltwater. The special regulations on this page change the bag, size, slot, or gear rules for Upper Dam Pool; they do not waive the license requirement. Free-fishing days and youth exemptions follow the statewide Maine rules.
- Do Upper Dam Pool (Richardsontown Township, Oxford County)'s special rules replace Maine's statewide limits?
- Only where they conflict. Maine's statewide 2026 regulations apply on Upper Dam Pool by default; the overlays above replace the matching statewide rule for the species or gear they name, while everything not specifically overridden still follows the statewide rule. When a water-body rule and the statewide rule disagree, the water-body rule wins.
