Black crappie — universally called speckled perch, or 'specks', in Florida — are the state's most-pursued freshwater panfish, and Florida's mild winters produce one of the longest spawning runs in the country. The statewide rule is a generous 25 fish per angler per day with no statewide minimum size. A handful of waters carry a quality-management overlay: on Lake Okeechobee, specks under 10 inches must be released. The bite peaks from roughly December through March, when slabs move shallow to spawn on the big central- and north-Florida lakes.
