What to know before you fish Petrified Forest

  • Park context: Petrified Forest NP protects one of the largest concentrations of Triassic-period petrified wood in the world, the colorful Painted Desert badlands of the Chinle Formation, Ancestral Puebloan archaeological sites (Puerco Pueblo, Newspaper Rock, Agate House), and the Route 66 corridor across northern Arizona. The park straddles I-40 between Holbrook and Chambers, AZ.
  • Hydrology: the Puerco River is the main drainage, flowing east through the park's central section toward the Little Colorado River. It is an arid-zone sand-bed channel with surface flow only during the July-August Arizona monsoon and after major winter storms — dry for most of the year with the channel hosting only sparse vegetation. Lithodendron Wash and several smaller arroyos are similarly ephemeral. There is no perennial pool, spring, or impoundment inside park boundaries.
  • Arizona licence framework: AZ Game & Fish issues the controlling freshwater licence as for all Arizona sport fishing; the licence framework applies by default but there is no in-park water it would govern. Park rules under 36 CFR §2.3 would govern any in-park fishing if such water existed.
  • Outside-park sport-fishery context: the Little Colorado River (~25 mi west — sporadic warm-water + occasional trout where flow allows) is the closest river-fishing option but is not a destination fishery; the higher-elevation reservoirs of the Mogollon Rim (~80-120 mi SW — Knoll Lake, Woods Canyon Lake, Willow Springs Lake) offer stocked rainbow trout in summer-cool waters under standard AZ G&F regulation + AZ trout stamp; Lyman Lake State Park (~50 mi SE near St. Johns) is the closest reservoir with bass + catfish + walleye + trout, on the Little Colorado River.
  • Practical effect: anglers visiting Petrified Forest for the wood / Painted Desert / Route 66 historic value who want to fit fishing into the trip should plan a separate stop at one of the Mogollon Rim lakes (Woods Canyon is the most popular family destination, with cabin and store services) or Lyman Lake. The park itself offers no in-park fishery and no NPS-published fishing guidance.

How licensing works at Petrified Forest

Petrified Forest National Park runs on the host state's regular fishing license — there is no separate National Park Service fishing permit to buy. Use the same Arizona license you would use anywhere else in the state.
