A valid West Virginia fishing licence is REQUIRED for everyone fishing within the park, with year-long and 3-day tourist licences sold at area sporting-goods stores and bait shops. A West Virginia trout stamp is additionally required for trout fishing on the park's stocked trout streams. WV regulations control season + bag, with park-specific federal overlay: hook and line only, with the rod or line closely attended.

What to know before you fish New River Gorge

  • Primary fishery is the New River itself — a major warm-water fishery holding smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, striped bass, rock bass, walleye, muskellunge, crappie, bluegill, carp, flathead catfish, and channel catfish. Spring and fall are the best seasons (water-temperature transition + most-active feeding); early morning and late evening are the best times of day. Common bait includes nightcrawlers and hellgrammites (black and yellow phases); popular artificial lures include top-water crank-baits, spinner baits, minnow imitations, and crawfish patterns.
  • Stocked trout streams within the park (WV DNR stocks each spring with golden, rainbow, brook, and brown trout — trout stamp required to fish for trout): Mill Creek (very limited access from Ansted or Hawk's Nest State Park via state route 5), Laurel Creek (access via Beckwith Rd from Hawk's Nest State Park or 4-H Camp Rd from Youngstown), Glade Creek at Babcock State Park (access from headquarters parking by the Grist Mill, plus seasonal access via Old Sewell Rd), Dunloup Creek (state route 25 runs alongside with multiple pullouts — the most easily accessible stream in the park), Glade Creek at New River Gorge (access from Glade Creek Campground via Glade Creek Trail running 5.5 miles), and Meadow Creek (limited parking along Claypol Rd). Additional close-by trout water outside the park: Gauley River (Summersville Dam tailwaters, Gauley Tailwaters campground; Masons Branch / Woods Ferry / Upper Swiss high-clearance), Meadow River, and Little Bluestone River.
  • Catch-and-release sections: Glade Creek from the pedestrian bridge 3 miles down to its New River confluence is designated catch-and-release for trout. The New River from the I-64 bridge at Sandstone 12 miles downstream to the Grandview Sandbar is designated catch-and-release for black bass — this covers smallmouth, spotted, and largemouth bass. C&R protocol applies elsewhere too: return fish to water as soon as possible, unhook in the water, handle as little as possible, use needle-nose pliers, and revive by moving the fish back and forth through the water until it can swim away.
  • Park-specific federal rule: fishing in fresh waters must be by hook and line only, with the rod or line closely attended. NPS regulations under 36 CFR §2.3 govern; WV state regulations apply where they do not conflict. The fishing regulations apply only to 'finfish' for NPS purposes — other taxa (amphibians, mollusks, crustaceans including waterdogs and crayfish) are governed by 36 CFR §2.2 (wildlife). Fishing rules apply regardless of land ownership across all lands and waters within the park that are under federal legislative jurisdiction.
  • Public access points within the park: Tug Creek Beach, Brooks Falls, Hellems Beach, and Sandstone Falls via River Road at Hinton; Meadow Creek; McCreery, Grandview Sandbar, Mill Creek, and Glade Creek off Hwy. 41 near Prince; Dunglen and Stone Cliff near Thurmond; Cunard; and Fayette Station. Crossing private property to reach the New River requires landowner permission. Nearby federal / state water also good: Bluestone National Scenic River, Gauley River National Recreation Area, Meadow River, Greenbrier River, Bluestone Lake, and Summersville Lake — each governed by its own permit / licence stack.

New River Gorge National Park & Preserve runs on the host state's regular fishing license — there is no separate National Park Service fishing permit to buy. Use the same West Virginia license you would use anywhere else in the state.
