What to know before you fish Curecanti NRA

  • Park context: Curecanti National Recreation Area protects ~43,000 acres along three Bureau of Reclamation reservoirs on the Gunnison River in west-central Colorado — Blue Mesa Reservoir (~9,180 acres, the largest body of water in Colorado), Morrow Point Reservoir, and Crystal Reservoir. The three reservoirs sit immediately UPSTREAM of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park; the Crystal Dam tailwater feeds directly into the Black Canyon NP gorge. Curecanti is jointly identified with Black Canyon NP through the East Portal Road, the Gold Medal Wild Trout Water designation that spans both units, and shared Colorado Parks & Wildlife (CPW) regulations. Blue Mesa Reservoir is the primary kokanee-egg-source water for Colorado state hatcheries — CPW supplies a large number of the kokanee eggs needed to sustain stocked populations in lakes statewide.   • Licensing: visitors fishing within Curecanti National Recreation Area must possess a valid Colorado fishing licence per CPW rules. (d) KOKANEE TAKING PROHIBITED in the Gunnison River east of the Lake City Bridge from Aug 1 - Oct 31 (protects pre-spawn kokanee staging).
  • Park-specific overrides — closed waters + Gold Medal reach per the Curecanti compendium: CLOSED WATERS — no fishing in the following dam-tailwater safety zones: from Blue Mesa Dam downstream 225 yards; from Morrow Point Dam downstream 130 yards; from Crystal Dam downstream 200 yards. GOLD MEDAL + WILD TROUT WATER REACH: the Gunnison River from 200 yards downstream of Crystal Dam all the way through Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park to the North Fork is designated Colorado Gold Medal + Wild Trout Water by CPW (the highest CPW designation for trophy-trout-potential waters). Special regulations on the Gold Medal reach: only artificial flies or lures with ONE HOOK (a common-shank single, double, or treble) may be used; the use of lead sinkers and other lead fishing materials is strongly discouraged; BAIT OR WORMS ARE PROHIBITED; ALL RAINBOW TROUT ARE CATCH-AND-RELEASE ONLY; other species can be retained at the possession limit; a Colorado fishing licence is required. (This Gold Medal designation is the same one referenced in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP entry — Curecanti + BLCA are the same Gold Medal reach, jointly managed.)
  • Anchor species — IN-RESERVOIR: BROWN, BROOK, LAKE (MACKINAW), and RAINBOW TROUT are plentiful in Blue Mesa Reservoir; KOKANEE SALMON `Oncorhynchus nerka` (CPW state-hatchery egg-source — Blue Mesa is THE source water for Colorado's kokanee egg supply); YELLOW PERCH `Perca flavescens`; SCULPIN; DACE; STICKLEBACKS. Fishing success varies seasonally — early summer ice-out drives strong trout + kokanee bite; late summer + fall drives trophy lake trout deep-jig bite; fall snag windows for spawning kokanee are the marquee event. Boating: each of the three reservoirs has different character + boating opportunities — Blue Mesa is open and wide (best for deep-trolling lake trout + kokanee), Morrow Point + Crystal are narrow steep-walled canyons (best for boat-in bank fishing + scenic float). Special restrictions or closures may be in effect during the rainbow trout spawn — verify the CPW current-year regulations brochure before fishing.
