What to know before you fish Black Canyon of the Gunnison

  • Gold Medal Water designation: Colorado designates streams and rivers as Gold Medal when they consistently produce outstanding angling opportunities for large trout. Of Colorado's 9,000+ miles of trout streams, only 362 miles carry the Gold Medal designation — the Gunnison Gold Medal section begins 200 yards downstream of Crystal Dam and continues to the confluence with the North Fork of the Gunnison. The special regulations are explicitly designed to maintain that quality, and they apply within both Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP AND within the adjacent Curecanti National Recreation Area at East Portal (the stretch between Crystal Dam closure and the park boundary).
  • Special regulations on the Gold Medal section: (a) artificial flies or lures only, NO bait, (b) all RAINBOW trout are catch-and-release only, (c) brown trout — daily bag 4, possession 8. Fishing is PROHIBITED within 200 yards downstream of Crystal Dam (the protected dam-tailwater hatchery zone). All Colorado general fishing rules apply otherwise; the Gold Medal layer is more restrictive, not a replacement.
  • River access via East Portal Road: the easiest vehicle access to the Gunnison inside the park. The road is extremely steep — 16% grade with hairpin curves — and vehicles with overall length (including trailer) greater than 22 feet are PROHIBITED. East Portal Road is CLOSED in winter. No wilderness permit is required for day-use anglers entering the park from East Portal.
  • Inner-canyon access (the more secluded routes): the inner canyon is technical, rocky, brush-choked scrambling, suitable only for anglers in excellent physical condition. A wilderness permit IS required for any inner-canyon access (other than the East Portal day-use case above). Obtain the permit via the park's Inner Canyon Use webpage before the trip; routes are not maintained trails and rescue is difficult.
  • Catch-and-release protocol on a heavily-managed wild trout fishery: bring fish in quickly; use barbless hooks or crimp barbs with needle-nose pliers; minimise handling and keep the fish in the water; net with knotless mesh; use a hook disgorger and cut the line above a deep hook rather than removing it; use a heavy leader to apply maximum pressure for a fast release; revive by holding the fish gently upstream until it gains equilibrium and swims off. The Gunnison's rainbow population in particular is declining and is the named reason for the all-rainbow C&R rule.
