A valid Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) fishing licence is required to fish inside Buffalo National River for anglers 16+. State fishing regulations from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission govern (refer to Regulations for Flowing Waters in the Arkansas Fishing Guidebook). Per 36 CFR §7.35 special regulations, ONLY HOOK-AND-LINE FISHING with rod or line CLOSELY ATTENDED is allowed throughout the river; GIGGING, BOWFISHING, and SNAGGING are permitted. Live or dead minnows or other bait fish may NOT be possessed or used UNLESS harvested from the Buffalo River or its tributaries (or purchased from a licensed dealer).

  • Park context: Buffalo National River, designated in 1972 as the first US National River, protects 135 free-flowing miles of the Buffalo River through the Ozark Plateau of north-central Arkansas (Newton, Searcy, Marion, and Baxter counties). The river runs east from headwaters in the Boston Mountains to its confluence with the White River at Buffalo City. The park spans three management units — Upper District (Ponca to Pruitt), Middle District (Pruitt to Tyler Bend), and Lower District (Tyler Bend to the White River confluence including the Buffalo Point unit). The river system hosts SEVENTY-FOUR fish species per NPS — twelve are game fish, and ten are endemic to the Ozark Plateau. Park HQ: 402 N.   • Arkansas licence framework: anglers 16+ require an AGFC fishing licence — Resident Annual, Non-Resident Annual, 3-Day, 7-Day, and Trout Permit stamp (required to keep trout statewide) options available.   • Anchor species — Buffalo River is a renowned SMALLMOUTH BASS destination, the marquee draw for Ozark anglers and visiting fly-rod travellers. Other game species per NPS habitat key: largemouth bass, OZARK BASS (Ambloplites constellatus — ENDEMIC to the Ozark Plateau, only found here and in nearby Ozark drainages), green sunfish, bluegill, longear sunfish, northern hog sucker, black + golden + river redhorse, yellow bullhead, channel catfish, flathead catfish. WHITE RIVER COLD-TAILWATER TROUT — brown trout and rainbow trout are stocked in the COLD tailwaters of the White River BELOW Bull Shoals Dam and Norfork Dam; near the Buffalo's confluence with the White River, these trout occasionally enter the lower Buffalo. ENDEMIC OZARK SPECIES (non-game but defining) include Ozark Chub, Duskystripe Shiner, Ozark Shiner, Autumn Darter, Greenside Darter, Arkansas Saddled Darter, Yoke Darter, Knobfin Sculpin — anglers should not target these. FLY-FISHING for smallmouth + sunfish + Ozark bass with poppers and crayfish patterns is a NPS-promoted experience.
  • Outside-park context: Buffalo Point campground + cabin area (Lower District) is the principal angler-camping base; canoe / kayak / johnboat outfitters operate along the river corridor from Ponca to Buffalo City. The river is undammed for its entire 135-mile NPS length — making it one of the few remaining truly free-flowing rivers in the eastern half of the US, and a major Ozark Plateau ecological reference reach. AGFC licences sold at AGFC online portal + Arkansas sporting-goods dealers + Walmart locations + Tyler Bend Visitor Center general store. Tributaries reaching the river from the Boston Mountains include the Big and Little Buffalo Creeks, Bear Creek, Calf Creek, Mill Creek, Richland Creek, and Hurricane Creek.
