Lake Cumberland is Kentucky's flagship striped bass fishery and one of the South's premier inland striper destinations — the 65,000-acre Cumberland River impoundment grows landlocked stripers into the 40-pound class, fished hardest with live skipjack and shad on the summer thermocline. To rebuild the trophy class after years of summer-stress die-offs, KDFWR holds Lake Cumberland to a protective 22-inch minimum and a 2-fish daily limit, tighter than the 15-inch / 5-fish statewide rule that governs every other water. Herrington Lake, the Cumberland River tailwater below Wolf Creek Dam, and the Tennessee River chain round out the striper waters. Anglers should not confuse true striped bass (Morone saxatilis) with the white bass and the white-bass × striped-bass hybrid ('wiper' or 'Cherokee bass'), which share a separate, far more liberal 15-per-day limit.
