What to know before you fish Ozark NSR

  • Park context: Ozark National Scenic Riverways protects ~134 mi of the Current River + Jacks Fork River across the Missouri Ozarks. Authorised by Public Law 88-492 in 1964, ONSR is the FIRST NATIONAL PARK AREA EVER ESTABLISHED TO PROTECT A RIVER SYSTEM — predating the federal Wild & Scenic Rivers Act of 1968. The Current + Jacks Fork are spring-fed cold-clear free-flowing rivers fed by hundreds of freshwater springs (Big Spring is one of the largest single-outlet springs in the world). Park HQ: P.O. District contact stations: Big Spring Entrance Station (Van Buren MO, year-round), Alley Spring Mill & Store (Eminence MO, Memorial Day–Oct 31), Round Spring Ranger Station (Eminence MO, summer only).
  • Licensing: visitors fishing within Ozark National Scenic Riverways must possess a valid MISSOURI fishing licence per the Missouri State Wildlife Code (administered by Missouri Department of Conservation, MDC). Trout fishing in any MDC trout-management waters requires a separate Trout Permit. Licences are sold online via the MDC portal and at MDC-registered vendors statewide.
  • Park-specific federal rules per Superintendent's Compendium (under 36 CFR §1.5 + §2.3): (a) Fishing in spring pools and spring branches is PROHIBITED on federally-owned land within the boundaries of ONSR — including Big Spring Branch (except limited boating access from the Current River upstream to the boat dock at Big Spring Lodge), Cave Spring Branch (vehicle crossing only, for access to Hickory Landing), and Schafer Spring Branch (vehicle crossing for Suzie Nichols access). All other activities and entry into spring pools and branches on federal land are also prohibited without a written permit from the Superintendent (preserves enabling-legislation mandate to protect springs as a primary park purpose). (b) DIGGING FOR WORMS OR OTHER BAIT IS PROHIBITED on federally-owned land within ONSR. (c) Taking of frogs, turtles, and crayfish is authorised in accordance with the Missouri State Wildlife Code (no park-specific override). (d) Standard NPS §2.3 prohibitions apply: hook-and-line only with rod/line closely attended; chumming prohibited; no drugs / poisons / explosives / electricity; commercial fishing prohibited except where statutorily authorised; immediate-return mandate for undersize/out-of-season/unwanted fish; no fishing from motor-road bridges or within 200 ft of designated rafts / floats / swim beaches / boat docks except in designated areas; no introducing wildlife / fish / plants including reproductive bodies (no bait-bucket dumping). (e) Specimen collection (taking of plant, fish, wildlife, rocks, or minerals) requires a permit under 36 CFR §2.5(a).
  • Anchor species (per MDC + NPS): SMALLMOUTH BASS `Micropterus dolomieu` — the Current + Jacks Fork are NATIONALLY RECOGNISED trophy-smallmouth destinations, with the upper Current River + Jacks Fork managed under MDC SPECIAL SMALLMOUTH MANAGEMENT AREA rules (12-inch minimum length, more restrictive bag limit, gear restrictions in some reaches — check the current-year MDC trout-and-bass-area regulations summary). ROCK BASS (goggle-eye) `Ambloplites rupestris` is a locally important sport fish in the cool spring-fed reaches. RAINBOW TROUT + BROWN TROUT (stocked) in MDC-designated trout-management waters near major spring outlets — TROUT PERMIT REQUIRED on top of base licence. Other species: LARGEMOUTH BASS, WALLEYE `Sander vitreus` (in deeper downstream pools), CHANNEL CATFISH, FLATHEAD CATFISH, BLUEGILL + LONGEAR SUNFISH `Lepomis megalotis` + GREEN SUNFISH `Lepomis cyanellus`, and SUCKER species (gigging is a regulated Missouri tradition under MDC Wildlife Code).
  • Outside-park context: MDC issues species-specific Missouri Fish Consumption Advisories applicable across the Current + Jacks Fork (mercury bioaccumulation in larger predators). Standard access at Akers Ferry, Pulltite, Round Spring, Two Rivers, Alley Spring, Eminence, Powder Mill, Owls Bend, Van Buren, Big Spring, Gooseneck, and Cataract. Closed campground notice: Pin Oak Campground + Loops 600 and 700 of Big Spring Campground remain closed (April 2017 flood damage). Pin Oak River Access: limited to commercial use only on weekends Memorial Day–Labor Day. Cave + cave-spring access: most caves within park boundaries are closed (white-nose syndrome bat protection) — only Round Spring Cave (tours only) and Cave Spring near Devils Well remain open to visitors. ALCOHOL: state + federal alcohol laws apply; open containers prohibited at Alley Mill, Alley Store, Storys Creek School, and any park-owned/leased buildings, vehicles, or vessels.
