What to know before you fish Lake Clark

  • Preservation of the sockeye salmon fishery was an original founding purpose of the park — Lake Clark hosts some of the most intact watershed habitat in the National Park System. Season runs primarily May–October with peak July–August during salmon runs; some interior lakes are still iced over until June. Ice fishing is open in winter where lakes freeze through.
  • Headline destinations: Crescent Lake (Chigmit Mountains — sockeye + lake trout + grayling), Silver Salmon Creek (coho run mid-Aug to early Sep, fished alongside coastal brown bears), the Tanalian and Tlikakila Rivers (salmon + Dolly Varden), and the Mulchatna River system below Bonanza Hills (salmon + rainbow trout). All five Pacific salmon species are present in the system along with arctic char, arctic grayling, Dolly Varden, lake trout, rainbow trout, and northern pike.
  • Lake Clark is bear country wherever salmon run — anglers must keep gear immediately on their person, surrender catch (cut the line or give slack) if a bear approaches a hooked fish, clean fish at the waterline and disperse all remains into fast-moving current away from the shore, and accept that bears have right-of-way on prime fishing sites.
  • Most park access is by float plane from Anchorage / Port Alsworth — there is no road access and there are no in-park licence sales kiosks. Buy the Alaska licence + king salmon stamp + any harvest record card before flying in.
